T minus 7 days

31 Jan

In one week I will be on a plane to Australia.

Ok, technically I’ll be on a plane to LA, where I will then board a plane to Australia, at which point I will fly for 15 hours and completely pass over February 8th, 2011 and arrive in Sydney on the 9th… but the point is I leave in a week and I have not in any way begun to pack or think about packing.  Typical.  I have a lot to do before I leave, so here’s hoping I get my act together and don’t try to pack everything the night before like I usually do.

Anyway, I wanted to give a little introduction to this blog before I actually get to Australia and get caught up in orientations.  Everything you need to know is under the “About Me” tab so I won’t rewrite it all here.  In a nutshell: my name is Kat, I’m studying abroad at JCU in Townsville, Queensland, Australia this semester and I’m going to write about/photograph/videorecord (is that a verb?) my adventures down under for my friends and family and any other randos who start following this blog (which is totally cool; I creep all over the internet and follow blogs of people I’ve never met and never will, so I welcome the randos.)  I’ve read a lot of study abroad and travel blogs and I’ve noticed a common and unfortunate theme- most people start out strong intending to update every day or every week or whatever, but once they really get into the swing of things they drop off the face of the earth/the blogosphere.  Updates get farther and farther apart until like three months pass and a post finally pops up saying something like “OMG sorry guys!!  I’ve just been having so much fun that I haven’t gotten the chance to write!”  I understand, of course, but it’s always such a bummer when I get to that point in a blog I’m reading.  So, I’m going to do my very best to avoid that.  I’m not going to promise updates every x number of days, but I do promise that I won’t just stop writing and never come back.  Luckily for me, I have computer-savvy parents and grandparents who will nag me if I start getting lazy with my updates, so I think I’ll be able to keep it up.

That’s all I have for now.  Every time I look at this blog it depresses me that there are no pictures on it yet so I’m going to end this first post with a photo of a sunrise over the Atlantic ocean.  It seems unrelated BUT I was just thinking about how I’ve seen tons of sunrises over the Atlantic, but I’ve never seen a sunrise over the Pacific… and soon I’ll get the chance.  So until then, here’s a good old American sunrise for you guys.  Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to check back in about a week for my first photos of the land down under!
