About Me

This is me:

I like really bad sci-fi movies, coffee, thunderstorms, tie-dye, snowboarding, and the ocean, and am usually always late.  I’m a 3rd year undergrad student at the University of Virginia studying environmental science with a specialization in biological conservation, but what I’m really interested in is marine biology/conservation.  Unfortunately, UVA is not the best place for this (if you don’t understand why, look it up on a map.)  So, I decided to go somewhere that is.

James Cook University is rated as one of the top universities in the world for studying marine science.  They have an entire school dedicated to it… you can check it out here.  The Townsville campus, where I’ll be, is located adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef and is only a few hours south of Australia’s tropical rainforest.  Townsville is a vibrant city filled with gardens and parks and it has some of the cleanest beaches in Australia.  In other words, it’s pretty much paradise.  I’ll be there for five to six months (depending on when I run out of money) and I intend to make the most of every second.

I created this blog so that my friends and family can follow along and check up on me.  I’ll be posting tons of pictures and videos and posting as often as I can.  Thanks for checking out my blog, and enjoy!

(All photography is by me unless otherwise noted.)

    Hi Katie,
Wow, Australia looks so great! What an awesome experience. I can’t wait to see more. I forwarded your link to Megan also so I am sure she will check it out soon. Have fun and enjoy the time in Australia! Love, Aunt Patty

Kat – Very cool to see what you’re up to. I’m an old friend of your Mom’s, and I just dropped my daughter, Julie, off at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. She is very interested in studying abroad–but she’s not sure what or where. Your blog provides great insight into the whole experience! Best of luck re-acclimating to the States! Mouse
